"...while our State governments are the very best in the world, without exception or comparison, our General Government has, in the rapid course of nine or ten years, become more arbitrary, and has swallowed more of the public liberty than even that of England."
-Thomas Jefferson to John Taylor, November 26, 1798

With all the opposition to the Iraq war, one would expect that even a remote possibility of a similar war occurring would generate massive protests. Strangely, there is virtual silence as Iran is accused of harboring a nuclear weapons program and terrorist training camps.

Why is the media again echoing the same war propaganda that opened the doors to a war in Iraq? Where are the Democrats who can put a stop to this?

Is anyone not aware that wild fish are in deep trouble? That three-quarters of commercially caught species are over-exploited or exploited to their maximum? Do they not know that industrial fishing is so inefficient that a third of the catch, some 32 million tonnes a year, is thrown away? For every ocean prawn you eat, fish weighing 10-20 times as much have been thrown overboard.

The asshole quality of people like Sarkozy and Boris Johnson and Bush and Cheney is part of the unconscious self-loathing of the populace. It's the outward projection of the increasingly putrid inner lives (what there is of them) of the people of western advanced capitalist societies. School shootings, addiction to useless anti depressants (and drugs and booze of all kinds) and to TV and video distraction is all part of the same fabric. It's why I fear McCain will probably win the election next year. His snarky rictus of a smile, his near pyschotic glare and his rigid and robotic body movements all reflect the collective malaise of the nation. Scalia, Cheney, Boris, Condi, McCain, Clinton (both of them) ... These are all dark repugnant people bereft of compassion. They are the projections of our dark Id. ... To vote for those who hate you, who want to take more from you, who openly insult you, is a sign of madness. And this is a culture of almost total madness.

Nice rant.

As soon as we lose the fear, the terrorists lose their power over us to control our behavior. If western governments were really trying to win a war on terror as they claim then they would downplay and sideline acts of terror, pointing out that an individual has more chance of being struck by lightning than being killed in a terror attack.

Iran is under tension within and without. It has the potential to become a major Asian and Mideast power, free from U.S. control.

Republican Party officials in Missouri are the latest to make an attempt to stop Ron Paul's duly elected delegates from attending the national GOP convention. Their method is even more brazen and ill-considered than previous ones: according to them, supporting Ron Paul is evidence of disloyalty to the Republican Party.

The politics of power over principles is coming to an end. Conservatives are going to take the GOP back from those who gave us Bush, even if it means losing the executive branch forever.

Jack Shaheen Raps Hollywood for Vilifying Arabs

Hollywood's depiction of Arabs has eased the path for US administration policy, he argues. Decades of portraying Arabs and Muslims as the enemy "made it that much easier for us to go into Iraq," he said. "There were very few people protesting.

"Plato said: `Those who tell the stories rule society.' Nothing has changed, and the story-tellers of today have a tremendous impact on the world as we perceive it."
